Ah, I've had that mid-story desire for tense change come up too, though it's too much for me to actually do it - if the operative phrase occurs in the first few paragraphs, I may go back, but otherwise I just alter wording until the current tense works for me. And yes, present tense stands out in memory while past doesn't (which is why you don't get people complaining about how so much fanfic is in past tense, dammit) - I was actually surprised to find I hadn't written any "Lewis" stories in present tense.

It's a combination of immersion and detachment, and the detachment is what's striking and unexpected, because it's not the tight third POV that you'd expect. It's almost like he's reliving his life. Weird, but it works.
