Water metaphors
Mar. 8th, 2013 08:27 am(My nose is dripping again, a constant flow exacerbated by sneezes and coughs. I can only hope that this is the last gasp of the cold that's lasted well over two months now, because after all it's just about time for allergies to kick in again. But these are not the metaphors you're looking for.)
"Proteus," well. I do like how the episode titles just do their own thing usually, and leave it up to us to explain, though this one was pretty heavy-handed when considered (water, transformation, check). I'm not entirely sure the perp's story made sense (how do you take on someone's identity that thoroughly without trailing clues?) and the writing was clumsy in places; the same writer produced "Critical" which I really liked, but this one felt a bit like the show was parodying itself, which of course it does do with regularity. And I was rather distracted throughout by wondering if they were meant to be in the middle of Sandy (especially since the ep that aired right after the actual storm was set in an undisturbed Far Rockaway (as in fact was part of the "Elementary" ep right after it), not that they could help that) and if so what that meant in terms of dates, because I thought we were in 2013 already, but if not what it meant in terms of climate change, because it's a little early in the year for a hurricane. So are we in the future now?). Also, I guessed who the killer was very early on.
However, I am a sucker for stories set in the middle of storms, and I loved the way the tension of the larger arc imposed itself, and oh, storm-chasing Mr. Finch. And Carter! (even if her appearance was improbably well-timed).
There are three more episodes listed in the season, with significant gaps between them. It's going to be hard to wait it out.
