I am rather tired and I forgot to go to a play tonight (don't worry, a high school musical with no relatives in it, I think I can spare the cash and no one will kill me), but I thought I would express myself on the subject of fic hits, under a cut to spare my blushes.
So here's the thing: I am not a BNF and never will be, but I've been quite happy with the reception of the fics I've posted in a bunch of fandoms. I'm never displeased with hit counts or anything else; I'm in this to make a subset of readers happier and to have fun. And I've been around enough to know how you do get high hit counts; it's just never mattered to me.
So it is just mostly amusing (if a little shocking) to do the comparison. "The Three Graces," which was posted a month ago and has been well received (and got recced by a bunch of people), is just about up to 1100 hits as of today. And "The Rest Is Silence," which was posted three days ago, is at over 1100 hits and climbing. The first one's rated M and has a background M/F relationship that resolves into a M/M one. The second's rated E and is just slash. I personally don't think one's better written than the other; they're both pretty decent idfic. But oh, the difference. Fandom in a nutshell.
It is just hit count, by the way; they have about the same number of kudos and comments, so it's either more people reading and not giving feedback, or (more likely) the same people coming back to read it over and over, which I know is a compliment even if it still makes me squirm a little.
And by the way, I am totally thrilled to get that many hits on anything, and I'm thrilled by the much lower numbers on the intervening two as well. No complaints, just commentary.
So - doesn't mean I'll be out there writing lots more smut, though I have to say it was entertaining. The thing I'm working on now is probably gen (though of the affectionate sort, so who knows; we know my resistance level where Finch/Reese is concerned). It may actually end up good; I had some Thoughts about it today and might know where I'm headed now (even if Finch and Reese don't).
Gonna drink cocktails and watch "Mad Men" now. Later!
