Well, that was a typical pre-holiday travel experience. Though I do have to credit United for getting the problem resolved fairly quickly and beneficently.

In brief:

a) Yay! 4:15 nonstop flight is on time and all shall be well.
b) Boarding flight. Whoops, everyone get off the plane; plane is broken.
c) Flight may not go till 11:30 pm or may not go at all.
d) Just kidding! Looks like we have another plane for you.
e) But ha. Substitute plane will not accommodate all of you. A SACRIFICE MUST BE MADE. (The gate agent, very patient but a trifle flustered by this point, actually said that anyone who volunteered to give up a seat would be "confiscated." I think he meant "compensated." Hunger Games jokes were made by us.)
f) Since we are in one of the last boarding groups, chances are the sacrifice will be us.
g) No wait! The plane has enough seats; it's just that it won't fly all the way to San Francisco with all that weight onboard. Crash diet time - We can go with all of you if we make a pitstop to refuel. Just like in the old days!
h) So we're going to stop in Denver. Good thing it isn't yesterday, what with the snowstorm and all.
i) Though now of course the schedule is off so we have to wait on the runway in DC forever.

After that it all went pretty smoothly and we got to SF only three hours late (sucks for people with connections, of course, and the people in the row in back of us who had traveled all the way from Bangalore) and after a brief luggage confusion and a train ride to get the car we were on the way, and at least there was no traffic. We got to the (freezing cold) rental house at past midnight (I had been awake since about 4 am Eastern time, because I am an insomniac dork, and only lulled myself into a stupor on the plane, so nearly 24 hours and no evening pain meds) and fell into the frigid beds, and it was light when I awoke. And J. went off to the Berkeley Bowl and came back with food and coffee and all is now well.

How was your day?

Argh, fun with holiday travel. I get to drive the length of NJ (and part of NY) on Sunday, and again on Christmas Day. (Stupidly short visit, but my family has other guest on Saturday and I have to work on Wednesday.)

I had a tedious day at work, in between bouts of sorting out the middle of a ficlet that was giving me trouble (which ended up over 1000 words. Yipe. I was expecting about 500.)

And the timing could not have been better--I discovered the person I was writing for? It's her birthday. So I had a friend give it a super-quick beta and posted it as a comment in her journal--I'll haul it out into broader public later with the main (sequel) story goes up. That made me very squeeful, as the timing was pure luck.

Actually, I suspect Christmas will be worse than Sunday morning, and I'm not expecting either to be particularly bad. I'm sort of glad I didn't have to go down today or tomorrow.

And yay ficlet! I am revoltingly proud of it. I'm having such *fun*.
