Quick TV catch-up

Having finished all the Miss Fisher there is (I am tickled at them managing a Christmas (in July) episode), I hooked my husband on Agent Carter and we are now watching new episodes as they come available. It's still fun, if not much more than that. (Unpopular Fannish Opinion: not that thrilled in general with the Marvel universe.) I do enjoy the heck out of every scene that Peggy and Jarvis are in together, not because I ship them but because I love the unabashed reversal of competence tropes.

We also started watching Scott and Bailey (liking it so far) and started - and finished - Broadchurch, behind the rest of the known universe as usual. It was very well done in all aspects including its exploitation of pathos - perhaps a bit shameful but narratively efficient and exciting. In fact, the narrative made such a lot of sense to me that I made an intuitive guess at the murderer a few episodes in, and knew I was right in the second-to-last episode; so much for unexpected twists. Am finding the existence of a second season a bit hard to comprehend, but I guess there can be more to the story; seemed perfect the way it was, though. (Also it was great fun to see David Tennant and Arthur Darvill on the same show at the same time, both of them with their little tics that occasionally bring Ten and Rory to mind. And to watch DT brood for Scotland.) (And of course Olivia Colman and Lesley Sharp both had their DW cameos as well - all these familiar faces…)

Sleepy Hollow continues to use manufactured conflict to poor effect, and I am sadly disappointed. Also sad about Elementary but not because the story wasn't well done.

That should be it - until new POI next week!!

Thank goodness for you, I really thought I was the only one. :) Also, m'boy and I are most of the way through s1 of Miss Fisher, and it's so delightful! Definitely my favourite show of the last good while.

You know, the movies have all been fun except where I've fallen asleep during them (which is only because I'm old), even Winter Soldier on the tiny airplane screen, and I appreciate a number of the performances especially Tom Hiddleston's, but… just no there there, for me. Admittedly I am more crotchety than I would be otherwise because of everyone else's total obsession.

And yes, Miss Fisher is totally delightful.

The Marvel universe, yeah, it doesn't really do a lot for me either. I watched half an episode of Agent Carter and it was fun and Jarvis and Peggy were great, but I got interrupted halfway through and haven't felt any overpowering urge to find out what happens next yet.

And yay for Miss Fisher! The Christmas-in-July episode was a bit too cracktastically contrived for me, but hey, stranding Jack and Phryne together in a snowstorm is fictional gold. I hope there will be more.

And I'll be interested to hear what you think after you've seen some more Scott & Bailey. It did have some rocky bits, mostly with everyone's increasingly bizarre personal relationships, but the detective plots were always solid. And Janet's interview technique is a thing of beauty and a joy forever.

We have only watched two episodes of S&B so far (because Broadchurch kind of sucked us in) but I really like the characters even when they make less-than-smart decisions, and the plots have a nice realistic edge to them. It's, you know, a nice balance to Miss Fisher and Agent Carter. The latter of which could use a lot more crack.
